This follows a Sh10 million contract the university signed with Avic International Holding Corporation on March 27, 2018. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Francis Aduol signed on behalf of TU-K while Mr. Su Tianshu, the Avic International Chief Representative in Kenya signed on behalf of the Chinese corporation. The recurrence was held at Radison Blu Hotel, Nairobi. The signing recurrence took place during the “Jenga Vijana” awarding recurrence in the presence of Education Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Amina Mohammed and China’s Ambassador to Kenya, Liu Xianf. Prof Aduol said TU-K is in the cusp of history as the first local institution of higher learning to manufacture and export heavy machinery equipment. “We are very happy with this contract. We have the necessary equipment and manpower to produce the required spare parts,” explained the Vice-Chancellor. The VC said TU-K is on undertow in contributing to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s “Big 4” projects for economic takeoff, manufacturing stuff one of them. The University has the necessary machines and technically qualified manpower to manufacture the necessary spare parts. Present at the function were: Principal Secretary for TIVET, Dr Kevit Desai, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Ms Betty Maina, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Planning, National Treasury, Dr Julius Maina, National Assembly Chief Whip, Hon. Benjamin Washiali, Chief Administrative Secretary, Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender, Hon. Rachael Shebesh, Avic International Holding Corporation Executive Vice-President, Liu Jun, among others. Mr Tianshu said the yearly youth empowerment CSR program, Africa Tech Challenge, endevours to equip the youth with technical skills both in Kenya and China. According to the agreement, Avic will present to TU-K the designs for the spare parts it would like manufactured by TU-K. He praised TU-K for the way it had closely worked with Avic since the inception of the Africa Tech Challenge in 2014 up to date. According to the Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Prof Alex Muumbo, the contract will enhance TU-K’s manufacturing topics by offering increasingly practical training opportunities for both students and staff. “The future is bright. Business opportunities will be opened since China is a big economy,” said Muumbo.
